Decluttering can feel overwhelming. However, with the right approach, it can also be a cathartic experience. Many clients have shared their struggles with decluttering. They often approach it in ways that sabotage their progress. Here are some common mistakes to avoid when starting your decluttering journey, along with my advice on what to do instead.
1. Doing It All at Once
One of the biggest pitfalls is trying to tackle your entire home at once. While the idea of a massive decluttering session may seem appealing, it often leads to burnout and frustration. Remember, "Rome wasn't built in a day," and neither will your home be decluttered in a day. Instead, break the process down into manageable chunks. Focus on one room or one small area at a time. A single drawer is not too small for this task. This way, you can celebrate small victories and keep your motivation high!
2. Keeping Piles Inside the House
It can be tempting to create piles of items you want to donate or discard and leave them sitting around the house. However, I've seen these piles become clutter themselves. Instead, load the bagged or boxed donations directly into your car. Allow extra time on your next trip into town to stop at a donation center (aka charity/thrift store). If you are looking for a worthy cause in Oconee County, South Carolina, click HERE to get my local list. If you wish to donate large or bulky items, many charities offer to pick them up at your home. It's as easy as scheduling a call—do it right away!
3. Starting with Sentimental Items
Starting with sentimental items like pictures, children's clothes, or souvenirs can lead to emotional overwhelm. Instead, begin with less emotional categories. Focus on expired medicines, kitchen gadgets, or your junk drawer to build momentum. Once you gain confidence and clarity from decluttering these areas, you’ll be better equipped to tackle those sentimental pieces.
4. Not Having a Plan
Jumping into decluttering without a plan can lead to chaos. Before you start, take some time to decide what your end goal is. Do you want to create a place to work, sleep, get ready in the morning, relax and read, or make cooking easier? Gather the necessary supplies like boxes or bags for sorting. Having a clear plan will keep you focused and make the process more rewarding.
5. Buying Storage Before Decluttering
Purchasing bins, containers, and canisters before decluttering can lead to wasted money and space. Many people make the mistake of trying to organize items before decluttering. The reality is, you cannot organize too much stuff. You will only hide the clutter and bury the problem. Focus on decluttering first—let go of what you don’t need, and then you can think about how to best organize what you've decided to keep.
The Benefits of Decluttering
Decluttering is not just about getting rid of items. It’s about creating a space that reflects your lifestyle and values. A clean and organized home can reduce stress and increase productivity. When you declutter, you create room for the things that truly matter. You can enjoy your space more fully.
Emotional Benefits
Decluttering can also have emotional benefits. Letting go of items that no longer serve you can be liberating. It allows you to reconnect with what’s important. This process can lead to a sense of accomplishment and clarity. You may find that you feel lighter and more at ease in your environment.
Practical Benefits
On a practical level, decluttering makes it easier to find things. You won't waste time searching for items buried under clutter. An organized space can also make cleaning easier. Less clutter means fewer surfaces to dust and clean.
Long-term Changes
Once you declutter, consider adopting habits to maintain your space. Regularly assess your belongings. Make it a habit to evaluate items as they come into your home. This way, you can prevent clutter from building up again.
You Can Do It!
By avoiding these common mistakes, you’ll find that decluttering can be a liberating and enjoyable experience. Take your time, stay focused, and remember that every little step counts!
