Organizing as Self-Care: Josie's Story

When clutter takes over your home, it can feel overwhelming and exhausting to even try to make a change. All you can see is the mess—on the kitchen counters, the closet floor, or the dining table. A tidy, functional space may seem impossible. You may feel defeated, ashamed and even broken. But what if you approached decluttering and organizing not from a mindset of failure, but as an act of kindness toward yourself?
This mindset shift can transform the process into a form of self-care.

You’re not organizing because you should.
You’re organizing to save yourself time, energy, and stress.
Your decluttering to clear space for things that matter most to you.
You're doing all of this because when you feel better about your home you feel better about yourself.
And when you feel better about yourself, you can have better relationships
And if you're struggling to do it on your own, there is no shame in asking for help.
My client Josie (not her real name) finally acknowledged that getting organized was the self-care she needed, and this nudged her forward to hire a professional organizer. In truth, she was actually a very organized person at heart, craved order, and had great ideas for many of the spaces in her home. But she was overwhelmed and frustrated because it was too much to tackle on her own, life was busy, and the voice of shame was strong.
Once we cleared the clutter and organized the very first small space (the pantry) Josie immediately felt hopeful. Together, we tackled especially challenging spaces, which just needed new vision. Even areas that weren't used often got a reset (ie: basement storage.) Even her storage area got a reset. Now that her entire home is organized, she feels a heavy weight lifted. And she is enjoying:
Reduced decision fatigue because we set up systems that are easy to maintain. No more asking, “Where should I put this?”
Saved time because she wasn’t searching for lost items or digging through piles anymore.
A calming, beautiful home that gives her a sense of peace in every room.
Simple systems that make life easier and support how she and her family live.
Confidence that she can maintain her organized spaces.
We decluttered and restored order to Josie's kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathrooms, daughter's room, playroom, office, craft space and closets. Organizing didn’t just change all these spaces physically - it changed how she (and her family) felt living and moving in the home, as evidenced by all the messages she sent to me throughout the process.
"Walking through a home that isn't overwhelming & is visually pleasing... is priceless!!!"
"So many things are working well now."
"I have such joy & peace walking through my home now!!!"
"The healing work you do is still providing a calm & peace for me--even and especially in the middle of one of the busiest and most cluttered times of year!" (Christmas-time)
My daughter said, "I wanna wash clothes now! It's so easy to find what you need!" (in the laundry room)
When your home supports you instead of draining you, everyday life feels lighter, less scattered, and possible. And that’s where organizing truly becomes self-care.
