If you’ve ever stood in the middle of a messy room thinking, Where do I even start?—you’re not alone. I’ve been there. The turning point for me (and for so many of my clients) wasn’t buying better bins or finding the “perfect aesthetic.” It was discovering the quiet magic of categories.
Categories sound simple, almost too simple—but they change everything.
Why Categories Make Sense
When you group like with like, your home starts to make sense. Instead of “random stuff everywhere,” you suddenly have clear zones: all the batteries together, all the cleaning supplies in one place, all the kids’ art supplies in one bin. It’s easier to see what you have, easier to find what you need, and - drumroll please - easier to put things back.
That last part? That’s how you stay organized.
How Categories Help You Stay Organized
Most clutter builds up because things don’t have an obvious home. Categories create those homes. When everything belongs somewhere logical, tidying up becomes almost automatic. No more decision fatigue every time you pick something up, or walk in the door and wonder "Where should I put this?"
Where to Start When You Feel Overwhelmed
But what if you’re overwhelmed and don’t even know where to begin?
Start small. Seriously small.
Pick one tiny space: a single drawer, one shelf, or even just your purse. The goal isn’t to organize your whole house in a day. It’s to build momentum.
Next, pull everything out of that space and start grouping similar items together. Don’t overthink it. Just ask, Are these things similar? Put them in little piles: pens with pens, cords with cords, snacks with snacks.
Then, edit. Once you can see everything in each category, it becomes much easier to let go of duplicates or things you no longer use. You might realize you have five pairs of scissors, or that half the pens you own don't even work.
Finally, give each category a home. This doesn’t have to be fancy. A simple container (shoeboxes work in a pinch), a drawer divider, or even just a designated spot on a shelf is enough. The key is that it’s consistent and easy to maintain.
A Simple Trick: Declutter by Category Instead of Space
If you’re still feeling stuck, try flipping your approach: choose a category instead of a space. Gather all the coffee mugs from around your house. Or all the extra toiletries. Seeing everything together can be surprisingly motivating. and a little eye-opening.
Final Thoughts: Simple Organization That Actually Works
Getting organized isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating a home that works for you. Categories are just a simple, powerful way to get there. Categories are the best tool to declutter your home, get organized, and stay organized long-term. Start small, keep it simple, and let categories do the heavy lifting.
